Addicts in LIFE, July 1971
When I was young, I lived with two wealthy parents who liked to drink. Then, I lived with two middle class parents who drank a lot. When all was said and done, I lived with two poor alcoholics. That was why my experiences in Nam really stayed with me. I saw these tortured boys abusing themselves with something even worse than alcohol--drugs like cocaine and heroin.
When I was in Nam, I kept a subscription to LIFE magazine. I had it sent to a friend's house, and then she shipped it to me. My friend sent a letter with each stack of magazines, and the letter that accompanied this one warned me against opening the July 1971 issue. "It'll strike a soft spot, Gloria"-that's what she wrote. And she was right. It struck me so hard, I had to include it here. Hats off to Arthur Schatz, who wrote and photographed the story about Vietnam vets who came home with a heroin addiction..
